New Roots Landscapes "Brown Patch"
This time of year a fungus known by the common name "brown patch" seems to terrorize yards with St. Augustine grass. This problem is generally caused by over watering, and with additional times of heavy rain fall it can really spread quickly.
The disease generally spreads and forms a circular shape. Often there is a ring around the brown area in the grass. This ring is the area where the fungus is most active. Spores can be spread by humans walking through the spots, mowers, and animals. The disease effects the bottom portion of the grass leaf blade. The roots are not effected, which allows full recovery if treated.
A fungicide should be applied by a professional. Fertilizers high in Nitrogen and in quick release form should not be applied to the infected area.
